What to Know Before Packing for Moab
Before you start throwing items into a suitcase, it’s important to understand the desert conditions:
- Temperature swings: Days can reach the 80s, 90s, or even low 100s, while mornings and evenings may dip into the 20s in the winter.
- Sun & wind: Intense sun and gusty winds can affect hair, clothing, and why it is generally not recommended to have a ceremony setup.
- Trail access & terrain: Some areas are remote, dusty, or rocky so plan shoes and gear accordingly.
- Limited services: Some trailheads and locations don’t have nearby stores or bathrooms.
Knowing this ahead of time ensures you pack smart and enjoy your Moab elopement without surprises.

What to Pack for a Moab Elopement by Season
Moab’s desert climate can be extreme and unpredictable, which makes packing with the season in mind essential. Temperatures swing dramatically between day and night, the sun can be intense, and certain trails or locations may only be accessible at specific times of year. By tailoring your packing list to the season, you’ll stay comfortable, safe, and camera-ready so you can focus on enjoying your adventure elopement instead of worrying about whether you’re overdressed, underprepared, or missing something crucial.
Spring (March–May)
Spring in Moab starts cool, with occasional windy days and muddy trails, especially in higher elevations. By late March and April, the desert begins to warm up, and wildflowers start blooming.
Packing Tips for Spring:
- Layers are key: lightweight long sleeves, a fleece or jacket for mornings/evenings
- Hiking boots or trail runners for muddy spots
- Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen for sunny days
- Small umbrella or windbreaker for sudden spring storms
Summer (June–August)
Summer brings hot, dry desert conditions, with temperatures often in the 90s or higher. Early mornings and late evenings are best for ceremonies and portraits to avoid the harsh midday sun.
Packing Tips for Summer:
- Breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics
- Extra water bottles and hydration packs
- Sun protection: wide-brim hat, sunglasses, high SPF sunscreen
- Light scarf or buff for dust during off-road adventures
- Minimal layers (lightweight jacket only for cool evenings)
Fall (September–November)
Fall is one of the most beautiful seasons for Moab elopements. Temperatures are moderate, and the desert glows with warm, earthy tones. Weekdays are less crowded than weekends, making it ideal for photography and privacy.
Packing Tips for Fall:
- Layered clothing for mornings and evenings (light jacket or sweater)
- Hiking shoes with good traction for uneven terrain
- Sun protection for daytime adventures
- Hand warmers if doing sunrise or sunset photos
Winter (December–February)
Winter mornings can be cold, especially at sunrise, and some higher elevation trails may have snow or ice. However, fewer crowds mean more privacy for your ceremony, and the crisp air can make for striking photos.
Packing Tips for Winter:
- Insulating layers: down or fleece jackets, gloves, and a hat
- Warm base layers for early morning photos
- Hiking boots with good traction for snowy or icy areas
- Lip balm and moisturizer to protect against dry desert air
- Hot beverages in a thermos for comfort during outdoor adventures
